In July the Basketmakers' Association enquired whether Northumbria Basketry Group would host the 2020 BA Summer Meeting, after a little exploration we agreed on the date of Saturday 13th June 2020.

A group of four visited Cullercoats Community Centre to explore using the venue for the event. The centre has an active heritage group that meets weekly seeking to keep the rich history of the local fishing community alive through photographs, fishing baskets, fisherwomen's costumes and maintaining other archives. Most importantly members of the group have a host of family memories from the 19th and 20th centuries when Cullercoats was an active fishing port with as many as 170 fishing cobles based there. In holding the Summer Meeting at the Centre we hope to offer a unique insight into their lives, the wide range of specialised baskets recquired day in, day out and other aspects of that bygone era.

Not only does the Centre present a focus to build the day around, it is about 100 yards from the sea, has extremely good public transport links, with a Metro stop a few minutes walk away.

The day is at present, a blank canvas, likely to run from 11-4 pm, free to BA and NBG members, which Cullercoats Group and other NBG members need to shape.

Please contact Lorraine at, secretary@northumbriabasketrygroup.co.uk if you would like to help or contribute in any way to the arranging and hosting.
