Work is ongoing at Whittondean trimming the initial growth on the stools of a number of varieties that tend to produce long rods.

Every year the demand for shorter rods exceeds the supply from the plot. In an attempt to get a better fit between supply and demand we are cutting the fresh growth of Black Maul, Nicholsonii Purpurescens, Flanders Red, Bleu Bleu and Calliantha varieties in May and early June.

This trimming leads to a shorter growing season and shorter rods.
