The sun shone today at Whittondean. The site is on the south facing slope of the valley and at this time of year receives around 3 hours of sunshine as the sun rises above the Lordenshaws Iron Age Hillfort and then sinks back again. The sunshine was welcome as the temperature remained locked below freezing all day.

Liz, Alan, Sheila, Paul and I set to work cutting and sorting the Nicholsonii Purpurescens that were planted close to the willow shelter. Progress was slow as the first year growth featured rods with a lot of branches and a considerable amount of sorting was necessary.
