The recent warm weather and spells of rain have resulted in rapid growth of the 11 varieties of basketry willow planted at Whittondean. Virtually all of the 4,500 or so cuttings are growing vigorously. Most of them upwards but the Norbury cuttings display the usual tendancy to grow horizontally in the first year of growth - see image. The cuttings appear to have benefitted from the early planting and it will be interesting to compare the growth at this open south facing site with the growth achieved at Whitton in 2010.
